Migrant workers and leaders of migrants’ organizations spoke about the current plight of both local and migrant DWs in HK and the looming insecurity brought on by the spillover effects of the global economic crisis. The DW leaders were asked to specifically voice out their concerns on issues closest to their hearts and to enumerate specific demands from the HK government as well as their respective countries of origin.

Bangladesh
Civil society groups and trade unions in Bangladesh discussed the challenges of globalization during the first Global Network seminar in the country. The Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS) organized the seminar on May 25-26 in Dhaka, where 34 trade unionists, NGO workers and academics identified the role of international institutions as well as the NGOs, civil society groups and trade unions in the current world economic order.

Hong Kong
The Global Network activities in Hong Kong involved trade unions, labor NGOs and various grassroots movements. The first participating organizations were composed of 7 trade unions, 3 labor NGOs and 5 community-based organizations that carried a wide range of issues, including the rights of women, children, elderly and the territory\’s residents, brought together by a common concern on globalization\’s impact on Hong Kong\’s social policies and economy.

Primarily intended for Indian homebased workers, the Global Network\’s national seminar here — in cooperation with the Self-Employed Women Association (SEWA), International Federation of Workers’ Education Associations (IFWEA), UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and HomeNet South Asia — nevertheless drew prominent trade unionists, NGO leaders and women workers not only in India but from other countries as well.

Korea
The Korean economy and society felt profound changes after the 1997 financial crisis that swept the region. Foreign finance capital brought with it hard realities of globalization for the Korean workers. This was the subject of discussion during the first GN national seminar in Seoul last June 28.

Thailand
A rally and two seminars were organized for the Global Network project in Thailand through the efforts of the Center for Labour Information Service and Training (CLIST). Demanding better occupational health and safety environment, about 400 workers, led by allied trade unions of CLIST, marched to the Department of Labour on March 29 in Bangkok.
